How do I file a task or note under a module on a plan?

Open the task's actions and click ⤴ assign to module…, or on a note click ⤴ assign. A picker opens listing your canvas plans. Choose a plan from the dropdown, then click the shape you want the item filed under. From then on that task or note is scoped to that feature and shows up in the plan's own list. If the picker reads "No canvas plans", you have not drawn a canvas plan yet, so make one first.

Before you start

This only works with a canvas plan that has at least one shape on it, because a shape is what you file the item against. If you have not made one, do that first: see What is the plans tab, and what are canvas, tasks and notes plans?. The tasks and notes kinds of plan do not have shapes, so they never appear in this picker.

Filing a task

  1. In the project's side panel, open the tasks tab.
  2. Click the task's text to open its actions.
  3. Click ⤴ assign to module….
  4. A picker appears. At the top-left is a dropdown of your canvas plans. Pick the plan you want.
  5. The shapes on that plan are listed below. Type in the "Filter nodes…" box to narrow a long list.
  6. Click the shape you want the task filed under. The picker closes and the task is now scoped to that feature.

Filing a note

  1. In the notes tab, click a note's title to expand it.
  2. Click ⤴ assign in the row of actions.
  3. Pick a canvas plan and then a shape, the same way as for a task.

Where the item shows up afterwards

Once a task is filed under a shape, it appears in that plan's tasks list (a plain table of everything filed there). A filed note appears in the plan's notes list. This is how the tasks and notes kinds of plan get their contents. If you open one before anything is filed, it reads "No tasks assigned to this plan yet" or "No notes assigned to this plan yet", with a reminder to "Use "Assign to module…" from the sidebar to scope a task here".

The item also still lives in the project's side panel as normal. Filing it does not move it out of your tasks or notes tab; it links it to a place on the plan as well.

Changing or removing the link

Open the same actions again. On an already-filed item the button now reads ⤴ reassign to module… (or ⤴ reassign for a note), which reopens the picker so you can choose a different plan or shape. To remove the link entirely, open the picker and click Unassign at the bottom.

How do I know it worked?

The picker closes when you click a shape, and the item is now scoped to that feature. Open that plan's list from the plans tab and you will see the task or note in it.

Common problems

"The dropdown says No canvas plans." You have no canvas plans with shapes yet. Go to the plans tab, make a canvas plan and add at least one shape, then try again. See What is the plans tab?.

"The plan is listed but there are no shapes to pick." The picker reads "No nodes in this plan yet — add some on the canvas first". Open that plan in the plans tab, add a shape with + add, then come back.

"I filed a task but it vanished from my tasks tab." It did not. Filing links the task to a plan; it stays in the side panel too. Check you are still on the same project folder.
