Why does a quadrant say it is already switching providers?
A quadrant shows this when a handoff from one coding agent to the other still holds it. Codus keeps the quadrant until that handoff finishes or fails, and a handoff that has to read a long saved conversation, start the new agent and confirm its account can take several minutes. Wait while its step and age in Switch status still look reasonable, then start or switch again. If the same step shows for more than about five minutes, the handoff has probably stalled: see the last section.
From Codus 0.2.195 the message names the handoff, for example "Claude is already replacing Codex in this quadrant: restoring the conversation, started 2m 10s ago from the Start button. Wait for it to finish or fail; it is listed in Switch status." Codus 0.2.194 and earlier show only "This quadrant is already switching providers" and list nothing, so a stopped quadrant could look busy for no reason.
Before you start
You need Codus 0.2.195 or later to see the running handoff. Update through Settings → Updates, then fully quit and reopen Codus.
Steps
- Click Claude or Codex in the status bar, then Switch status.
- Find the quadrant's row. While a handoff runs it reads Switching to Claude or Switching to Codex, followed by the step it is on (reading the saved conversation, restoring the conversation, checking the new account, or recovering the previous provider), how long ago it started, and whether it came from the Start button, a quadrant's provider menu, a delivered message, a queued switch or the Brain.
- Wait until the row no longer says Switching to. The quadrant then shows either the new agent running or the previous one, with a reason in the Codus log if the handoff failed.
- Start or switch the agent again.
If the Codex agent quit on its own
The Codex CLI can update itself while a quadrant is using it. It prints "Update ran successfully! Please restart Codex" and quits to a plain terminal prompt. Codus does not restart it for you. Start Codex again from the quadrant's Start button once no handoff is running for that quadrant.
If the handoff does not finish
A handoff that stays on the same step for more than about five minutes has probably stalled, usually because the new agent could not sign in or confirm its account. Codus gives up on its own after its time limit, releases the quadrant and keeps the previous agent if it was still running. Wait for the row to clear, then start again. If it never clears, fully quit and reopen Codus. Send support the Codus version shown in Settings → Updates, the step and age the row showed, and the lines from the Codus log that begin with "provider-switch".
How do I know it worked?
The Switch status row for the quadrant no longer says Switching to, and the Start button or provider menu accepts your choice without the message.
