My screen recording came out silent, or won't import
codus needs a small free audio helper to pull the sound out of a recording, and it is missing on your Mac. Open the recorder (the rec button in the top bar), and near the top you will see an amber notice reading ffmpeg is not installed on this Mac or Audio support is missing (ffprobe). Click the button under it, Install ffmpeg or Install audio support. codus downloads its own copy in one click (about 40 MB, no admin password), and future recordings keep their sound and import normally.
Your microphone is fine and macOS is not blocking anything. This is a missing helper, not a permission. Recordings you already made without it were captured, but their narration was dropped on the way into the video project.
First, check this is the cause
If your microphone were switched off, that is a different fix: see I allowed screen recording but codus still can't record my screen, which also covers the microphone.
This page is the right one when the sound was there while you recorded, but the finished or imported clip is silent, or when codus shows one of these two notices in the recorder:
ffmpeg is not installed on this Mac
Audio support is missing (ffprobe)
The fix
- Click the rec button in the bar along the very top of codus.
- At the top of the recorder, find the amber notice. codus explains it there: without the helper, "the narration can be dropped and the clip imports silent".
- Click the button under the notice. It reads Install ffmpeg when the whole helper is missing, or Install audio support when only the audio part is. It changes to Installing… while it works.
- Wait for it to finish. codus confirms in place when it is done.
You do not need a password, and nothing else on your Mac is changed. codus keeps its own copy.
Re-recording the silent clip
Installing the helper does not add sound back to a clip you already made without it, because the audio was lost when that clip was imported. Record the take again with the helper in place and it keeps its sound.
How do I know it worked?
The amber notice is replaced by a short green confirmation, and the Install button is gone. Record a short test with a microphone selected, let it import, and play it back. You should hear both your voice and your computer's audio.
Still stuck
Recording needs the Video module and is macOS only. If the install button reports an error instead of finishing, your Mac may be blocking the download on the network. Try again on a normal connection, and if it keeps failing, tell us what the notice says.
