How do I change an agent's provider, model or reasoning?

Use the provider selector at the bottom of a quadrant or Brain to choose its coding agent. Use the adjacent agent settings button for Model and Reasoning, where the selected provider supports those controls.

Before you start

A provider is the program doing the work. An account is your sign-in to that provider. A model is the AI it uses; reasoning controls how much thinking it is asked to do. Changing one is not proof that the others changed.

The selector includes Claude, Codex, Muse, Grok, OpenCode, Antigravity, GLM and LM Studio. Availability depends on installation and configuration on your computer. A listed option is not a promise of access to every model or platform. Provider subscriptions and usage charges remain separate.

Change the provider

1. Focus the intended quadrant or Brain.
2. Open its provider selector. Not installed options need setup before you can choose them. Sign in on launch requires authentication.
3. Choose an available provider and let Codus finish switching.
4. Wait for the target session to be ready before sending more work.

Codus carries conversation context across a supported handoff and retains provider-native sessions. This is not a transfer of running tools or background processes between providers. If Codus says the terminal is busy, let work finish or deliberately stop it before retrying.

If the provider is not signed in

In Codus 0.2.204 or later, choosing Claude or Codex for a Brain or quadrant checks that the provider is signed in for the account that Brain or quadrant uses. If it is not, Codus opens a window titled Log in to Claude to continue (or Log in to Codex to continue) and holds the switch until you sign in. Short steps sit at the top and the provider's own sign-in runs in a terminal below.

1. If the window says Sign in as followed by an email, that is the account this Brain or quadrant uses. If your browser is already signed in to a different account for that provider, sign out of it there first.
2. Your browser opens on the Claude sign-in page, or the ChatGPT sign-in page for Codex. If it does not, click Open sign-in page, or open the link shown in the terminal.
3. Sign in and approve access, then come back to Codus. If the Claude terminal asks for a code, paste the one the browser shows and press Enter.
4. The window shows Signed in with your email and Continuing…, then closes, and the switch carries on by itself.

If you signed in as a different account from the one named, the window says so and asks you to sign out of that account in the browser and sign in again as the named one. Click Try again to start a fresh sign-in. If Codus already has a working login for the account you signed in with, the window also offers Use that account instead; choosing it moves this Brain or quadrant to that account and carries the switch on.

Cancel closes the window and stops the sign-in. The switch does not happen and the current provider keeps running.

If a switch fails later because of a sign-in problem, the error message has a Log in to Claude or Log in to Codex button that opens the same window.

Codex one-time setup on Windows

On Windows, Codex asks once how to keep your PC safe when it runs commands. In Codus 0.2.204 or later, when a switch to Codex stops at that question, Codus says that Codex is waiting at Windows sandbox setup and opens the same window as Finish Codex's one-time setup, with Codex running inside it.

1. Use the arrow keys to choose 1. Set up default sandbox for the strongest protection (Windows asks once for administrator permission), or 2. Use non-admin sandbox if you cannot approve an administrator prompt. Press Enter.
2. Answer anything else Codex asks. When Codex reaches its prompt, the window closes and the switch carries on.
3. If the window stays open after you have answered, click I've finished.

Codus never picks a sandbox option for you. If you close the window, the error message offers Set up Codex to open it again.

Change a model or reasoning level

1. Click agent settings beside the provider selector.
2. Choose Model or Reasoning from the offered options.
3. Read session and Next start labels. They distinguish the detected running choice from the configured choice.
4. Wait for any safe session restart or resume to finish.

Options depend on the provider. A disabled control or absent model is not fixed by repeatedly clicking it. Check the provider's access and installation first. The intelligence indicator is a Codus comparison aid, not a guarantee of quality for your task.

How do I know it worked?

The target provider is active and answers. The settings show the intended session model after detection. For account changes, check Switch status, not the provider label alone.
