How do I dictate to codus instead of typing?

Click into the codus terminal so it has focus, press the § key, say your prompt, then press § again to stop. SuperWhisper types your words onto the terminal's input line for you, and you press Enter to send them to the agent, the same as if you had typed. The order matters: click the terminal first, or your words land wherever your cursor actually was.

Before you start

You need SuperWhisper installed and set up, with the § record shortcut and both the microphone and accessibility permissions granted. If you have not done that yet, see How do I set up SuperWhisper to dictate to codus?. SuperWhisper is a free third-party app, not a codus feature, but once it is running it types into codus like any other app.

Steps

  1. Click once into the codus terminal, the big panel where you talk to the agent, so it has focus. A cursor should be sitting there ready for you.
  2. Press § to start recording. SuperWhisper shows that it is listening.
  3. Speak your prompt in a normal voice, the way you would tell a colleague what you want done.
  4. Press § again to stop. After a moment your words appear in the terminal as text.
  5. Read it back, change anything you want, then press Enter to send it to the agent.

Why bother

You talk to your agents all day, and every prompt is something you would otherwise type out by hand. Speaking a paragraph takes a fraction of the time typing it does. This is the single most-loved add-on among codus users, for that reason alone.

It also changes how much you tell the agent. Describing what you want out loud is lighter work than typing it all, so people give fuller, clearer instructions, and fuller instructions get better results.

What about answering the agent's questions?

Dictation is for typing messages. When the agent offers a numbered list of choices, that part of the terminal is driven by the arrow keys and Enter, not by typed text, so pick from those lists with the keyboard rather than dictating. For anything where you would normally type a reply, dictation works exactly like typing. See How do I answer the agent when it asks me something?.

How do I know it worked?

Your spoken words show up as text on the terminal's input line, before you press Enter. If they appear there, dictation is landing in the right place and the agent will receive them the moment you send.

Common problems

Nothing appears after I speak. Either the terminal did not have focus, or the accessibility permission is off. Click into the terminal and try once more. If that does not fix it, see I dictated but nothing appeared in the terminal.

The text landed somewhere else. Whatever you last clicked had focus, not the terminal. Click into the terminal, then press §, and it lands in the right place.

Pressing § does nothing. The record shortcut may not be set to §, or your keyboard may not have that key. See the shortcut step in How do I set up SuperWhisper?.
