# How do I get a vertical (9:16) version for TikTok, Reels or Shorts?

Tick **9:16** under **Formats** when you record, and the team makes a phone-shaped vertical version alongside (or instead of) the normal widescreen one. The Full edit scope makes both formats by default. Each format comes out as its own render in the **Versions** tab.

## Before you start

- You choose the formats on the recorder popover, so this is set when you record with automatic editing on.
- **16:9** is normal widescreen. **9:16** is the tall, phone shape for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. **1:1** square may also appear for some sources.

## Step by step

1. Open the recorder (the **rec** button, or **Film footage** on a project).
2. Make sure **Edit automatically** is on.
3. Under **Formats**, tick **9:16**. Tick **16:9** as well if you want both. You cannot turn both off, since a video needs at least one shape.
4. Record and stop as normal. The team makes each ticked format.

If you pick the **Full** edit scope, both **16:9** and **9:16** are already ticked for you.

## I already recorded, or built the project by hand

Open the project, click **Run team**, and ask for a vertical version in the note box, for example "add a 9:16 cut for Reels". See [How do I run the video team?](how-do-i-run-the-video-team.md).

## What the vertical version is

It is not a plain crop of the widescreen video. The team reframes it for a tall screen, keeping you and any on-screen text in shot and readable on a phone. It is a proper vertical cut of the same content.

## How do I know it worked?

Open the **Versions** tab. You will see a separate render for the vertical cut. Play it with **Open video** and it should fill a tall, phone-shaped frame.

## Common problems

**"I only got a widescreen version."** **9:16** was not ticked when you recorded. Run the team again and ask for the vertical cut, or re-record with **9:16** ticked.

**"The 9:16 checkbox will not untick."** You cannot have both formats off. Tick **16:9** first, then you can untick **9:16**, and the other way around.

**"The vertical cut cropped something important."** Mention it in the **Run team** note, for example "keep the chart fully in frame on the vertical version", and run it again.
