# How do I add an SEO client and create a project?

You add a client as a **brand** (with the plus button at the top of the left column), then set its website in the brand's **Settings** under **Domain**, then create a **project** under that brand from its menu. A brand is your client, and a project is one piece of SEO work for them, like an audit or a content review.

## Before you start

- Open the **SEO** tab. If it is not there, you do not have the SEO module yet. See [Why can't I see the SEO tab?](why-cant-i-see-the-seo-tab.md).
- Have the client's website address ready, for example example.com.

## Step 1: Add the client as a brand

1. In the left column, find the **Brands** header. Click the **plus (+)** button on the right of that header. Its tooltip reads "New brand".
2. In the dialog titled **New brand**, type the client's name in **Brand name**, for example "Acme Coffee".
3. Click **Create**. The new brand appears in the tree and opens on its own.

If the tree is completely empty, you will instead see "No brands yet." with an **Add your first brand** button that does the same thing.

## Step 2: Set the client's website (its domain)

The new-brand dialog only asks for a name, so you add the website afterwards in the brand's settings.

1. Click the brand in the tree to open it, then click the **settings** sub-tab.
2. In the **Domain** field, type the client's website host, for example example.com. The hint explains this is "what labels the brand in the sidebar".
3. Click **Save**. A green **Saved** note confirms it. The brand now shows its domain next to its name in the tree, and the team knows which site it is working on.

While you are here you can fill in optional brand details lower down (a description, region, and so on) that the team can use, but only the **Domain** matters for a first audit. Every field is optional.

## Step 3: Create a project under the brand

1. Hover the brand row in the tree and click its **⋯** (more) button, or right of the row, to open its menu.
2. Choose **New project**.
3. In the dialog titled **New project**, type a name in **Project name** that says what the work is, for example "Homepage audit" or "Blog content gaps".
4. Click **Create**. The project appears under the brand and opens straight away, ready to run.

You can create as many projects under a brand as you like, one per piece of work.

## Optional: group clients into folders

If you look after a lot of clients, you can group them. Click the **folder** button next to the plus in the **Brands** header to make a folder, then use a brand's **⋯** menu and **Move to folder** to file it away. Folders can hold other folders too.

## How do I know it worked?

- The brand shows in the left column, with its domain beside the name once you have set it.
- The project shows indented under the brand, and clicking it opens the workspace with the **Data**, **Analysis** and **Charts** sub-tabs and a **Run team** button.

## Common problems

**"The new-brand box did not ask for the website."** That is normal. Add the website in the brand's **settings** tab under **Domain**, as in Step 2.

**"I typed a project name but nothing runs."** Creating a project does not start it. Open the project and click **Run team** to put the agents to work. See [How do I run an SEO audit with the team?](how-do-i-run-an-seo-audit.md).

**"It calls my client a brand."** The left column labels clients as **Brands**. It is the same thing as a client. Under each brand you create projects.
